PostHeaderIcon Cubs Trade Sam Fuld to Rays

Well it appears all but done now.  Matt Garza will be a Cub.  The Cubs gave up a lot of prospects for this, including Chris Archer who was rated as the team's #1 prospect by Baseball America.  Two other players in the deal were in the top ten.

Do I like Matt Garza?  Yes.  Do I like this trade?  Not really.  I think they gave up too much, which is not shocking for Jim Hendry.  I will however try to look at some positives here if there are any.
  • We got rid of Sam Fuld.  The man who gained so much popularity off one spectacular catch is gone.  This should allow a more able-bodied outfielder to move up the ranks easier.  Although I fully expect Fuld to show up down the road as our opponent and somehow burn us (e.g. Augie Ojeda with Arizona) in an important series.  Shit, sorry.  Staying positive here....
  • The top prospect in the trade, Chris Archer, was acquired from the Indians a while back in the Mark DeRosa deal.  So we can actually tell the DeRosa fanatics that the Cubs did in fact get something of value for him.
  • Please get rid of Carlos Silva now.  Please?  At least move him to the bullpen.  I keep hearing rumors of how getting Garza would let the Cubs shop around Tom Gorzelanny.  Um, why?  What are you going to honestly get for Gorzo anyway?  Also losing him would basically ensure the Cubs would be rolling with a rotation full of righties.  Yeah, that'll work out well.  Dempster, Wells, Garza, Gorzo, Zambrano.  There's your rotation.  If this trade can spell the end of any more starts from Carlos Silva I'll feel better about it.
  • Yeah, I got nothing.  Did I mention we got rid of Sam Fuld?
So welcome to the Cubs Mr. Garza.  Enjoy pitching more games outdoors..... and during the day..... I guess.
